Looking at the grain from the top side shows what’s called “birdseye”. It looks like lots of little eyes peering up at you. Imagine the grain in the wood as a bundle of straws. If you look at the top of the bundle, down into the holes, you are essentially looking at the birdseye section of the grain. As you can see in this picture, the white bamboo pipe I recently completed shows wonderful birdseye grain on either side of the bowl.
